The myth

Konohanasakuya-hime, "the princess who makes the blossoms bloom", is a daughter of the mountain god Ōyamatsumi. Ninigi, grandson of Amaterasu, fell for her and married her, but sent back her sister Iwanaga-hime, the princess of enduring rock. The myth says this is why human life is as brief as a blossom.

When she became pregnant after a single night, Ninigi doubted the child was his. To prove it, she shut herself in a birthing hut, set it on fire and safely gave birth to three sons inside the flames.

She is worshipped as the goddess of Mt. Fuji at the Sengen shrines.
