Kameido Tenjin 亀戸天神社

Koto, Tokyo · Open in Google Maps

Kameido Tenjin is a shrine to Sugawara no Michizane on Tokyo's east side, laid out in the style of Dazaifu Tenmangū in Kyushu, with a pond crossed by steep arched bridges.

What to look for

  • It is famous for wisteria: trellises around the pond bloom in late April and early May, and the shrine holds a wisteria festival.
  • Plum blossoms come earlier, in late winter.
  • From the pond you can see Tokyo Skytree rising behind the shrine, a view that mixes Edo and modern Tokyo.
